Finnigan MAT IRMS

irms02The GeoAnalytical Laboratory houses a Finnigan Delta S gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometer.  The instrument is applied to measure the oxygen isotope ratio of solid geologic materials using a high-vacuum laser fluorination line for the extraction of oxygen from silicate and oxide minerals.  Samples as small as 1 mg can be analyzed with a precision of better than 0.05 per mil.  We do not currently provide light stable isotope ratio analyses as a service, but special projects and/or access to the instrument can be arranged through Dr. Peter Larson.
